INTRODUCING MALAMA’S EHR INTEGRATION WORKFLOW

WHY DOES EHR INTEGRATION MATTER?

Malama formed out of the Stanford Biodesign program, where we learned to take a rigorous, needs-finding approach in order to develop digital health solutions that satisfy critical needs. To evaluate the needs, we had to dig deeper into the deceptively simple request of having Malama’s remote monitoring solution for pregnancy patients integrated directly into the EHR.

The benefits of integrating into the provider workflow were clear, yet there are tradeoffs to any integration, with new constraints (like less visually appealing design) to be considered. We interviewed with over fifty providers (OB/MFMs, endocrinologists, clinical diabetes educators, nurse practitioners, dietitians, and more), discovering underlying core needs related to the EHR integration request. These needs were:

  1. Improved care coordination. Care teams, particularly for pregnant patients with diabetes, are multidisciplinary and, with the rapid acceleration of telehealth adoption, may not be located in a central place. Providers need to access patient data in real-time to be able to understand who has reviewed logs, changed medication dosing, or to receive clear alerts when new data is available.

  2. Increased efficiency. With access to patient data through Malama’s HIPAA compliant provider portal in real-time, providers can significantly reduce administrative tasks such as manual data entry, allowing them to refocus on patient care. Having to transfer data from Malama to the EHR would add a manual step back into the process and needed to be avoided.

  3. Better patient safety. EHR integration ensures providers have access to accurate and up-to-date patient information from Malama’s portal, reducing the risk of errors in treatment plans or medication management.

HOW DOES EHR INTEGRATION WITH MALAMA WORK?

There are multiple ways to get Malama integrated into your clinic’s workflow:

  • Activate the Malama app within your practice’s Epic instance. This allows Malama to access patient data, such as medical history and lab results, directly from the EHR system as well as write to the EHR into the desired field (e.g., notes section).

  • Enable Malama through a partner platform. For institutions with Xealth or Redox, Malama can plug directly into the existing framework for digital health vendors to connect with health system clients.

  • SMART on FHIR app. Within the patient record, click a direct link out to Malama’s HIPAA compliant and secure provider dashboard without need to login again in order to retain Malama’s look and feel.

  • Copy structured data over from Malama’s provider portal directly to the patient record. Paste directly into the Notes section of the patient record with a link out for others on the care team.

HOW DO I GET STARTED INTEGRATING MALAMA?

Seamless integration into the workflow helps improve care coordination, increase efficiencies, and improve patient safety. Best of all, integration does not need to be complicated. Schedule a 20-minute demo with the Malama team to begin integrating Malama’s remote monitoring for pregnancy solution directly into your practice.

Trust us, your CDEs, NPs and RDs will thank you!
