our why
Our founder's story
When Malama founder Mika was diagnosed with gestational diabetes at 28 weeks, she felt like she had already failed at providing a healthy environment for her growing son. Between finding a (reimbursed) glucometer and strips to tracking sugar levels and meals, managing the diagnosis felt like a part-time job she was ill prepared to take on.
She ultimately birthed a healthy baby boy along with questions that would ultimately guide Malama: how might we reduce feelings of anxiety, isolation and overwhelm during this critical transition? What if we could make sense of all the data collected during GDM to identify patterns that make it easier to manage? How might we reduce rates of progression to T2D (currently at ~50%) to help women get and stay healthy through pregnancy and beyond? Thus, Malama was born.
