In Brenda’s own words:
MY BIGGEST STRUGGLE
At the beginning my biggest struggle was figuring out what specifically I could eat. I had met with the diabetic nutritionist and knew what types of foods to avoid but figuring out exact meals or exact snacks was more complicated.
most useful tips
By logging consistently with MALAMA, I identified three major insights:
1
2
Include fats and protein in every one of my meals
Take a walk after every meal to reduce blood sugar
3
Fruits are okay but fruit juices will spike my blood sugar
I like that Malama is an all-inclusive app. I can log my sugar, log my meals, take photos of my meals, get reports and insight into my blood sugar trends, and get alerts to stay on track with post-meal testing. I looked for an app exactly like Malama for months and didn’t find anything else like it. I feel like it’s exactly what someone with GD needs and I’m surprised that it’s the first time an app like this has been made.
MY GRADUATION STORY
Our little one was born one week early by C section due to being “large for gestational age”. When she was finally out, the surgeon yelled “baby out baby out” and in that moment I knew my world had changed. They brought her over to me and I instantly started crying, it was the happiest moment of my life. It was also a little scary because she needed to be monitored for 24 hours to ensure her blood sugar didn’t dropped too low, due to the GD. She did amazing, she did not have a single reading below 45mg/dL and thankfully, she didn’t require any time in the NICU.
We both did great with our blood sugar after she was born. My blood sugar was checked a few hours after delivery and was perfectly normal. I’ve passed all my blood sugar tests so far (currently 12 weeks post partum).
Now that I’m breastfeeding, my blood sugar is very well controlled and I’m able to eat more freely than when I was pregnant. However, I still like to follow a healthy diet like when I was pregnant.
